First: what your controller or mixer plugs in with
A DJ controller or mixer sends its master output to the speakers over a cable. Which cable depends on two things: the outputs on your controller or mixer, and the inputs on the speakers. Match them before you buy, not after the speakers arrive.
- Controller or mixerMaster output: RCA, XLR, or both.
- Signal cableRCA, XLR, or an adapter cable from RCA to a jack plug.
- Powered speakerThe inputs and the amplifier are inside.
- Second speakerOver speaker wire for a pair; its own cable and power for a single.
Controllers made for beginners often have RCA outputs only. Pioneer DJ’s DDJ-FLX4 has “MASTER output terminals (RCA pin jack type)” and “connects straight to your speakers or amplifier via a single RCA cable” (Pioneer DJ). Numark lists a “Microphone input, RCA output and headphone output” for the Mixtrack Pro FX (Numark). A mixer may add balanced XLR outputs: Pioneer DJ’s DJM-250MK2 has XLR and RCA (Pioneer DJ).
- Takes RCA: no adaptersPicks 1, 2, 3 and 6 have RCA inputs. A controller’s RCA outputs connect with an RCA cable: one stereo cable for a pair, one per speaker for the VM-70.
- XLR or TRS only: adapter cablesPicks 4 and 5 have balanced XLR and ¼-inch TRS inputs and no RCA. From a controller’s RCA outputs, use two RCA-to-¼-inch jack cables.
- A mixer with XLR outputsXLR cables go straight into picks 4, 5 and 6. Picks 1, 2 and 3 have ¼-inch TRS instead of XLR: use XLR-to-TRS cables, or the mixer’s RCA outputs.

Our reading of each maker’s published inputs and box list, checked 27 Oct 2026: advice, not a maker spec. Cable lengths depend on your desk.
Balanced or unbalanced? XLR and ¼-inch TRS are balanced connections: they cancel noise picked up along the cable. RCA and 3.5 mm are unbalanced. On the short run from a controller to desk speakers, an RCA cable is the usual connection; balanced cables help most on long runs and next to mains cables. All six picks take balanced inputs as well as, or instead of, RCA.
Pair or single: where the amplifier sits
- Pair in one boxOne speaker holds the amplifier, the inputs and the controls, and drives the other over speaker wire. One power socket and one signal cable. Picks 1, 2 and 3.
- Sold singly: buy twoEach speaker has its own amplifier, power cord and input. You need two speakers, two power sockets and two signal cables, and they can stand as far apart as the cables reach. Picks 4, 5 and 6.
Check the sales unit on the shop page: Thomann sells the HS5 and the RP5 G5 per piece, and each Eris as one pair.
Studio monitors or hi-fi speakers?
All six picks are powered monitors: the amplifier is inside, so a controller plugs straight in with no amplifier in between. They also have sound controls on the back, and balanced inputs for a mixer. Pioneer DJ’s DM-50D has a switch between a DJ sound and a flat one for production.
A hi-fi pair works too, if it is powered and has an input your controller’s output fits. Our speakers for vinyl guide covers powered pairs with RCA inputs. Passive hi-fi speakers need an amplifier between the controller and the speakers.

Inputs and outputs
RCA for a controller, XLR or ¼-inch TRS for a mixer, 3.5 mm for a laptop or phone. A headphone output on the speaker plays what the speakers play and mutes them; it is not a cue output.

Read from each maker’s published inputs and outputs, checked 27 Oct 2026. “None listed” means the maker lists no such output.
Power and loudness: read them the way the maker wrote them
Every maker states power differently. Pioneer DJ gives watts per speaker for the DM-50D (25 W + 25 W) and per driver for the VM-70 (70 W woofer, 30 W tweeter), into 4 Ω, with no measuring conditions. PreSonus gives 50 W in total for each Eris pair, 25 W per side, with no conditions. Yamaha gives 70 W per HS5, 45 W for the woofer and 25 W for the tweeter, with no conditions. KRK is the only one to state them: 55 W at 1% THD+N, plus a 130 W “total dynamic power” that is an instantaneous peak at 10% THD+N. Those numbers don’t line up, so we show each as published and don’t rank them.
The same goes for maximum loudness: Pioneer DJ states 106 dB at 1 m for the DM-50D as a calculated peak and 112 dB for the VM-70 with no conditions; PreSonus 98 dB and 100 dB peak at 1 m; KRK 104 dB, calculated from driver sensitivity and the dynamic power rating. Yamaha publishes none for the HS5.
Woofer size and range: check the basis
A frequency range means little without the level at its ends. At −3 dB the speaker is still close to full strength at the quoted frequency; at −10 dB it is much quieter there. KRK publishes both for the Rokit 5 G5: 54 Hz at ±3 dB and 43 Hz at −10 dB, for the same speaker. So a −10 dB figure looks deeper than a −3 dB one, and a range with no basis can’t be placed at all.
| Speaker | Woofer | Range, as published | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| PreSonus Eris 3.5 2nd Gen | 3.5-inch | 80 Hz – 20 kHz | Not stated |
| PreSonus Eris 4.5BT 2nd Gen | 4.5-inch | 70 Hz – 20 kHz | Not stated |
| Pioneer DJ DM-50D | 5-inch | 55 Hz – 22 kHz | −10 dB |
| Yamaha HS5 | 5-inch | 54 Hz – 30 kHz | −10 dB |
| KRK Rokit 5 G5 | 5-inch | 54 Hz – 30 kHz (±3 dB); 43 Hz – 40 kHz (+3/−10 dB) | ±3 dB and −10 dB |
| Pioneer DJ VM-70 | 6.5-inch | 37 Hz – 36 kHz | Not stated |
Ranges as each maker publishes them, checked 27 Oct 2026. Don’t rank speakers whose ranges have different bases, or none.
Desk depth, weight and room size
On a desk, depth decides whether the speakers fit beside the controller. Shallowest first:
- PreSonus Eris 3.5 2nd Gen 16.4 cm
- PreSonus Eris 4.5BT 2nd Gen 17.8 cm
- Yamaha HS5 22.2 cm
- KRK Rokit 5 G5 24.2 cm
- Pioneer DJ DM-50D 25.7 cm (left)
- Pioneer DJ VM-70 31.2 cm
Depth as published, converted from millimetres to centimetres where the maker gives mm. The DM-50D’s right speaker is 24.7 cm deep.
Weights as published: left 3.9 kg, right 3.5 kg for the DM-50D; 5.3 kg each for the HS5, 4.95 kg each for the Rokit 5 G5 and 7.7 kg each for the VM-70. PreSonus gives 3.1 kg and 4.5 kg for the Eris pairs without saying whether that is one speaker or both.
No maker here gives a room size. Pioneer DJ calls the DM-50D a desktop monitor system, and for the VM-70 suggests its ROOM 2 bass setting for extra punch in a large space. Woofer size is the closest hint: from 3.5 inches on the Eris 3.5 2nd Gen to 6.5 inches on the VM-70.
Bass port: front or back
Any speaker gains bass close to a wall; with the bass port at the back, blowing into that wall, the distance matters more. Picks 1 and 5 have the port on the front; the VM-70 has it at the back, and Pioneer DJ suggests its ROOM 1 bass cut near a wall. PreSonus and Yamaha don’t say where the port is on the Eris pairs and the HS5; Yamaha’s manual puts the ideal spot at least 1.5 m from walls and corners, with ROOM CONTROL to cut bass when closer.
Room and tone controls, Bluetooth, standby
The controls differ a lot. The DM-50D has a DJ/Production sound switch and lists no bass or treble control. The Eris pairs have High and Low knobs (±6 dB). The HS5 has ROOM CONTROL, which cuts bass below 500 Hz, and HIGH TRIM. The Rokit 5 G5 has 25 EQ settings, including cuts for a wall and a desk, and the VM-70 16, from a bass cut to club bass.
Only the Eris 4.5BT 2nd Gen has Bluetooth here; Pioneer DJ sells Bluetooth versions of the DM pairs too. Keep the controller on a cable: Bluetooth adds a delay between your hands and the sound.
Most of these switch to standby when no audio plays for a while: 20 minutes on the DM-50D, which can’t be switched off; 40 minutes on the Eris pairs; 30 minutes on the Rokit 5 G5 and 20 on the VM-70, both of which can be switched off. Yamaha lists no auto standby for the HS5.
What’s in the box
The pairs come with the speaker wire that joins the two speakers, and a cable from a 3.5 mm (⅛-inch) plug to RCA, but no RCA-to-RCA cable for a controller. The singles come with no signal cable at all: Yamaha’s manual says you’ll need to get the cables yourself, and neither KRK nor Pioneer DJ lists one for the Rokit 5 G5 or the VM-70.
The picks in detail
Each pick says what it suits and what to watch for, using only the published specs below it. Where a maker doesn’t publish a spec, we say so rather than fill it in.
Pick 1 · Best overall for a DJ controller
Pioneer DJ DM-50D
Pair in one box Takes RCA
A powered pair made for DJs: it takes a controller’s RCA outputs, a mixer’s balanced TRS outputs and a laptop’s 3.5 mm jack, and a switch on the back sets DJ or Production mode. The box has a 3.5 mm-to-RCA cable, not an RCA-to-RCA one.
Why it suits DJing at home
- Takes RCA, so a controller with RCA master outputs, such as Pioneer DJ’s DDJ-FLX4, connects with one stereo RCA cable. Balanced ¼-inch TRS inputs take a mixer’s outputs, and a 3.5 mm input takes a laptop.
- A switch on the back sets DJ mode, which Pioneer DJ describes as a punchy sound for DJing, or Production mode for a flat response.
- Bass ducts on the front, so it can stand closer to a wall than a rear-ported speaker. Pioneer DJ says the ducts’ grooves keep bass tight even against a wall.
- Headphone jack and volume knob on the front; plugging in headphones mutes the speakers.
- Pioneer DJ gives its range with the basis: 55 Hz – 22 kHz at −10 dB.
Watch out for
- No RCA-to-RCA cable in the box, only a 3.5 mm-to-RCA one. From a controller’s RCA outputs, buy a stereo RCA cable.
- It goes to standby after about 20 minutes of silence, and that can’t be switched off. Sound from the source wakes it.
- The RCA, mini jack and TRS inputs are mixed: everything plugged in plays at once, so turn down what you aren’t using.
- Leave 15 cm behind, above and beside each speaker for ventilation.
- The two speakers differ: the left is 25.7 cm deep and 3.9 kg, the right 24.7 cm and 3.5 kg.
To connect it (our reading of the inputs and the box list, not a maker spec)
- From a controller’s RCA outputs: One stereo RCA-to-RCA cable.
- From a mixer’s XLR outputs: Two XLR (female) to ¼-inch TRS cables.
- Signal cables in the box: 3.5 mm-to-RCA cable.

Pick 2 · Best for a small desk
PreSonus Eris 3.5 2nd Gen
Pair in one box Takes RCA
The smallest pair here, 21.0 cm tall and 16.4 cm deep, with RCA and balanced TRS inputs at the back and an aux input and headphone jack on the front. 3.5-inch woofers: a speaker for a desk, not a living room.
Why it suits DJing at home
- The smallest pick: 21.0 cm tall and 16.4 cm deep.
- RCA inputs for a controller’s RCA outputs, balanced ¼-inch TRS for a mixer, and an ⅛-inch aux input on the front.
- A headphone jack on the front that mutes the speakers when you plug in; one front knob sets both levels.
- Bass and treble tuning knobs at the back (±6 dB) for a desk that adds boom.
- Sold as a pair, in one box, and in stock at Thomann when we checked.
Watch out for
- 3.5-inch woofers and 80 Hz – 20 kHz with no measuring basis given: the least bass of the six on paper.
- The box has ⅛-inch-to-RCA and ⅛-inch cables, not RCA-to-RCA. From a controller’s RCA outputs, buy a stereo RCA cable.
- Power Saver puts them in standby after 40 minutes without audio.
- PreSonus says the inputs are not for several sources at once.
- PreSonus doesn’t say where the bass port is, or whether 3.1 kg is one speaker or the pair.
To connect it (our reading of the inputs and the box list, not a maker spec)
- From a controller’s RCA outputs: One stereo RCA-to-RCA cable.
- From a mixer’s XLR outputs: Two XLR (female) to ¼-inch TRS cables.
- Signal cables in the box: ⅛-inch-to-RCA and ⅛-inch-to-⅛-inch cables.

Pick 3 · Best with Bluetooth
PreSonus Eris 4.5BT 2nd Gen
Pair in one box Takes RCA
A step up from the Eris 3.5 with 4.5-inch woofers and Bluetooth 5.0, so a phone can play through the same speakers as the controller. Same inputs, headphone jack and cables in the box.
Why it suits DJing at home
- Bluetooth 5.0, so a phone can play through the same pair between sessions, without unplugging the controller.
- The same RCA, balanced TRS and front ⅛-inch inputs as the Eris 3.5, and the same front headphone jack.
- 4.5-inch woofers against the 3.5’s 3.5-inch; PreSonus rates it at 100 dB peak at 1 m against 98 dB for the 3.5.
- Bass and treble tuning knobs at the back (±6 dB).
Watch out for
- Mix from the cable, not over Bluetooth: Bluetooth adds a delay. PreSonus doesn’t state the codecs.
- Thomann listed it as in stock within 2–3 weeks on 27 Oct 2026, not straight away.
- No RCA-to-RCA cable in the box: from a controller’s RCA outputs, buy a stereo RCA cable.
- Power Saver puts them in standby after 40 minutes without audio.
- PreSonus doesn’t say where the bass port is, or whether 4.5 kg is one speaker or the pair.

Pick 4 · Best for a mixer with XLR outputs
Yamaha HS5
Sold singly: buy two XLR/TRS only: RCA needs adapters
A studio monitor sold one at a time: each speaker has its own amplifiers, power cord and balanced input. Made for a mixer’s XLR or TRS outputs; from a controller’s RCA outputs it needs adapter cables.
Why it suits DJing at home
- Balanced XLR and ¼-inch TRS inputs suit a mixer with XLR outputs, such as Pioneer DJ’s DJM-250MK2. Yamaha’s manual connects a mixer’s monitor or control-room outputs straight to the speakers.
- Each speaker has its own amplifiers (70 W: 45 W for the woofer, 25 W for the tweeter), so there is no cable between the two and they can stand apart.
- ROOM CONTROL cuts the bass below 500 Hz by 2 or 4 dB when the speakers have to stand near a wall; HIGH TRIM moves the treble ±2 dB.
- Range given with its basis: 54 Hz – 30 kHz at −10 dB.
- In stock at Thomann when we checked.
Watch out for
- Sold one at a time: you need two speakers, two power sockets and two signal cables.
- No RCA input. From a controller’s RCA outputs you need two RCA-to-¼-inch jack cables; Yamaha puts no signal cables in the box.
- Yamaha’s ideal is 1.5 m from walls or corners. Closer, set ROOM CONTROL to −2 or −4 dB.
- No headphone jack, and the level knob is on the back.
- Yamaha publishes no maximum loudness and doesn’t say where the port is.
To connect it (our reading of the inputs and the box list, not a maker spec)
- From a controller’s RCA outputs: Two RCA-to-¼-inch jack cables, one per speaker.
- From a mixer’s XLR outputs: Two XLR cables, one per speaker.
- Signal cables in the box: none.

Pick 5 · Best close to a wall: front port and room EQ
KRK Rokit 5 G5
Sold singly: buy two XLR/TRS only: RCA needs adapters
A studio monitor sold one at a time, with its bass port on the front and EQ settings KRK says roll off the extra bass a wall adds. One XLR/TRS combo input per speaker: from RCA outputs it needs adapter cables.
Why it suits DJing at home
- The bass port is on the front, so it can stand nearer a wall than a rear-ported speaker.
- For a wall or a desk that adds boom, KRK’s Low EQ cut settings roll off the extra bass a wall adds, and a desk filter tames the low mids a desk reflects.
- Three voicings (Mix, Create, Focus) and 25 EQ combinations, set from a knob and screen.
- KRK gives both ranges with their basis: 54 Hz – 30 kHz at ±3 dB and 43 Hz – 40 kHz at −10 dB.
- Standby after 30 minutes, which you can switch off.
Watch out for
- Sold one at a time: you need two speakers, two power sockets and two signal cables.
- One XLR/TRS combo input and no RCA: from a controller’s RCA outputs you need two RCA-to-¼-inch jack cables (KRK says the input takes an unbalanced TS jack too).
- Read the power right: 55 W at 1% distortion; the 130 W headline is an instantaneous peak at 10%.
- No signal cables listed in the box.
- No headphone jack.
- Thomann listed it as in stock on 27 Oct 2026, but KRK’s own US store showed it as unavailable the same day.
To connect it (our reading of the inputs and the box list, not a maker spec)

Pick 6 · Best for a bigger room and more bass
Pioneer DJ VM-70
Sold singly: buy two Takes RCA
The biggest speaker here: a 6.5-inch woofer, 70 W for the woofer and 30 W for the tweeter, sold one at a time. Each speaker takes RCA as well as XLR/TRS, and two dials on the back set 16 EQ combinations.
Why it suits DJing at home
- The biggest woofer here, 6.5 inches, with 70 W for the woofer and 30 W for the tweeter in each speaker.
- Every speaker takes RCA as well as XLR/TRS, so it plugs into a controller’s RCA outputs or a mixer’s XLR outputs without adapters.
- Two dials at the back give 16 EQ settings, from ROOM 1 (less bass near a wall) to CLUB BASS; Pioneer DJ suggests ROOM 2 for extra punch in a large space.
- Auto standby has its own switch, so the speakers needn’t sleep between practice sessions.
- Pioneer DJ rates it at 112 dB maximum, the highest figure here, though it doesn’t say how it was measured.
Watch out for
- Sold one at a time: you need two speakers, two power sockets and two signal cables. No signal cables in the box.
- Big for a desk: 34.1 cm tall, 31.2 cm deep and 7.7 kg each.
- The bass port is at the back. Near a wall, Pioneer DJ suggests the ROOM 1 bass setting.
- Pioneer DJ gives the range as 37 Hz – 36 kHz without saying at what level, so it can’t be set against the others.
- No headphone jack, and the volume dial is on the back.
To connect it (our reading of the inputs and the box list, not a maker spec)
- From a controller’s RCA outputs: Two RCA cables, one per speaker (or a stereo RCA cable long enough to reach both).
- From a mixer’s XLR outputs: Two XLR cables, one per speaker.
- Signal cables in the box: none.

Everything as the maker publishes it, checked 27 Oct 2026. Power and range are in the reading section above, because they don’t compare across makers. PreSonus doesn’t say whether its weights are one speaker or the pair.
How we picked
- One clear setup per pick: a controller with RCA outputs, a small desk, a phone as well as a controller, a mixer with XLR outputs, speakers close to a wall, and a bigger room.
- The connection first. Your controller’s or mixer’s outputs against each speaker’s inputs, the cables that takes, and pair or single. Then woofer and range with its basis, the port, the depth and what comes in the box.
- Specs from the maker. Every number on this page comes from the maker’s product page, spec sheet or manual, checked on 27 Oct 2026 and linked under each pick. Gaps are marked “not published”.
- On sale today. We left out models replaced by a newer one or no longer sold, and checked stock at Thomann on 27 Oct 2026. Thomann’s site knew no Pioneer DJ monitor when we searched, so those picks link to Pioneer DJ, whose monitor speakers page lists them as current.
We have not listened to or measured these speakers for this guide, and we don’t give scores. Where Max has used a pair himself, his notes will appear under that pick. The full method is on How we pick.
Not published by the maker:
- Pioneer DJ DM-50D: how the power was measured
- PreSonus Eris 3.5 2nd Gen: bass port, the level the frequency range is measured at, how the power was measured, whether the weight is one speaker or the pair
- PreSonus Eris 4.5BT 2nd Gen: bass port, the level the frequency range is measured at, how the power was measured, Bluetooth codecs, whether the weight is one speaker or the pair
- Yamaha HS5: maximum output, bass port, how the power was measured
- Pioneer DJ VM-70: the level the frequency range is measured at, how the power was measured, how the maximum output was measured
- None of the six lists a subwoofer output.
Considered but left out: Pioneer DJ DM-40D (the smaller DM pair, with 4-inch woofers and RCA and 3.5 mm inputs but no TRS; we picked the DM-50D, which adds balanced TRS inputs and 5-inch woofers); Pioneer DJ DM-40D-BT and DM-50D-BT (the same pairs with Bluetooth; the Eris 4.5BT 2nd Gen covers Bluetooth here and adds balanced inputs); JBL 305P MkII (a 5-inch speaker sold singly with XLR and TRS inputs only, the same role as the Yamaha HS5; we kept one of the two); KRK Rokit 5 G4 (replaced by the Generation Five; KRK’s G4 page said the item is unavailable); Mackie CR4-X (Mackie’s CR4-X page now redirects to its newer CR series, and Thomann lists the CR4-X as no longer available); IK Multimedia iLoud Micro Monitor (IK’s spec page lists a balanced XLR input that Thomann’s listing says it doesn’t have, so we couldn’t confirm its inputs at the source).
Questions
Can I plug a DJ controller straight into these speakers?
Yes: all six are powered, so no amplifier is needed. From RCA outputs, picks 1, 2, 3 and 6 take an RCA cable; picks 4 and 5 need RCA-to-¼-inch jack cables, one per speaker.
Do I need XLR?
Only if your mixer or controller has XLR outputs and you want to use them. XLR and ¼-inch TRS are both balanced; picks 1, 2 and 3 take TRS but not XLR, so from a mixer’s XLR outputs they need XLR-to-TRS cables.
Can I cue on the speaker’s headphone jack?
No. It plays what the speakers get, the master mix, and on the DM-50D and both Eris pairs plugging in mutes the speakers. Cue on your controller’s or mixer’s headphone output.
Can I mix over Bluetooth?
Better not. Bluetooth adds a delay between moving a fader and hearing it. Connect the controller with a cable and keep Bluetooth for the phone; the Eris 4.5BT 2nd Gen lets you do both.
Do I need a subwoofer?
Not to start, and none of the six lists a subwoofer output. A studio subwoofer can sit between the mixer and the speakers instead: Yamaha’s HS8S, for example, has left and right inputs and outputs and HIGH CUT and LOW CUT controls (80–120 Hz) (Yamaha).
How close to the wall can they go?
Follow the maker. Pioneer DJ wants at least 15 cm around each DM-50D speaker for ventilation and says its front ducts keep bass tight even against a wall. Yamaha’s ideal for the HS5 is at least 1.5 m from walls, with ROOM CONTROL when closer. KRK’s Low EQ cuts roll off the bass a wall adds. Near a wall, a front port is the easier start.
Why do my speakers switch themselves off?
Auto standby. After a stretch without audio most of these go to sleep, and sound wakes them. On the Rokit 5 G5 and the VM-70 you can turn it off; on the DM-50D you can’t.
