Best stylus cleaners

Should you clean your stylus dry, with a brush or a gel pad, or wet, with a fluid or an electronic cleaner, and which is safe for your cartridge? Cartridge makers differ: check what yours allows before you use a fluid (pick 3), a gel (picks 2 and 6) or a cleaner that uses a fluid (4). Brushes are picks 1 and 5.

Instructions, specs and prices from the makers’ own pages, read 27 Oct 2026. Plain shop links; they may earn us a commission later. How we pick

Dry or wet: four ways to clean a stylus

Why bother: Audio-Technica says “Although the stylus tip may not appear to be dirty, microdust and other debris accumulated on it can diminish sound quality and possibly damage the stylus assembly.” (Audio-Technica). How often: Ortofon says “Please remember to remove dust from the diamond tip before and after playback of each record.” (Ortofon FAQ).

The six picks cover four methods. Each maker’s instructions are for its own product:

  • BrushPicks 1 and 5, and the brush in pick 6Ortofon, for its brush (pick 1): “Use the brush in the forward direction from the rear of the cartridge toward the stylus tip and never from stylus tip to the rear of the cartridge and never from side to side.” Goldring, for the brush in its kit (pick 6): “Horizontally draw the brush gently across the stylus from back to front, applying as little upward pressure as possible.” Pro-Ject publishes no direction for Clean it (pick 5).
  • Gel padPick 2, and the gel in pick 6Clearaudio, for its gel (pick 2): “Usage is simple: the stylus is gently lowered onto the pad two or three times”. Goldring, for the gel in its kit (pick 6), if “fluff and sticky deposits” remain after the brush: “just place the pot on your turntable platter and lower the stylus onto the gel, lifting the stylus again and repeating if necessary.”
  • FluidPick 3Clearaudio: “High efficient stylus cleaning fluid including applicator brush to remove dirt and dust. 10 ml.” It publishes no steps and no ingredients.
  • ElectronicPick 4Walvis: “Moisten the cleaning pad with one drop of stylus cleaning fluid.” “Switch on the stylus cleaner and clean for about 10 seconds.”

What cartridge makers say about liquids and gels

Ortofon’s FAQ: “We advise against using any liquids on the stylus …” and “The use of solvents on the stylus and cantilever may damage stylus cement.” Its warranty doesn’t cover that: “The Ortofon warranty service will not be valid in cases where such treatment has caused malfunction of your cartridge.” (Ortofon FAQ).

Next to that, Clearaudio describes its own fluid, pick 3, as “High efficient stylus cleaning fluid including applicator brush to remove dirt and dust. 10 ml.” and Walvis has you put “one drop of stylus cleaning fluid” on its pad. Neither publishes what its fluid contains. So before you buy either, read what your cartridge’s maker says: the manual or its website.

Ortofon, on its care page: “We recommend the use of a dry brush only; avoid any fluids or gels as they can potentially damage the stylus or the internals of the cartridge.” (Ortofon: Protect your equipment). It names no product, and neither Clearaudio’s nor Goldring’s gel. Check what your own cartridge’s maker says.

Electronic cleaners

In Walvis’s words, for pick 4: “Ultrasonic cleaning works on the basis of a liquid that is brought into ultrasonic vibration with the Stylus to be cleaned.” Walvis calls pick 4 “ultrasonic” and publishes no frequency, so we can’t say more than that.

Dirty or worn out?

Ortofon lists dust as one cause of distortion: “Even minimal dust or debris on the stylus or record can introduce distortion.” It also says distortion “typically suggests that the stylus may be worn or damaged”, with more distortion on voices and string instruments toward the inner grooves, and with those symptoms the stylus “likely needs replacement” (Ortofon FAQ). How long a stylus lasts depends on whom you ask. Ortofon: “With proper care we find that up to 1000 hours is possible without degradation of performance.”; for DJs who scratch and back-cue, it says “DJ’s will have to consider about 500 hours at the most.” (Ortofon FAQ). Nagaoka: “For diamond styli, replace the stylus regularly, using approximately 200 hours as a guideline.” (Nagaoka FAQ).

The picks in detail

Each pick says what it suits and what to watch for, from the maker’s own pages and the dated, sourced notes listed under it. Where a maker doesn’t publish something, we say so. Claims about cleaning and sound are the makers’, quoted as theirs; we haven’t tested them.

Pick 1 · Best for regular use: fibre brush for every record side, €15.99

Ortofon Stylus Brush, Fiber

Brush

A fibre brush for the stylus, from a cartridge maker that publishes which way to brush it and when: a simple tool to use each time you play a new record or change sides.

Price: €15.99 at Ortofon’s shop (ortofon.com, EU), checked 27 Oct 2026, plus shipping. Prices change; the shop shows today’s.

illustration, not a photo
Illustration, not a photo: we found no licensed photo of the Ortofon Stylus Brush, Fiber on Wikimedia Commons or Unsplash. Drawn in plain shapes from the maker’s description; not to scale.

Why it suits

  • Ortofon says when: “whenever you play a new record or change sides”, a few strokes “along the cantilever in the direction of the stylus tip”.
  • And which way, for this brush: “from the rear of the cartridge toward the stylus tip and never from stylus tip to the rear of the cartridge and never from side to side.”
  • Ortofon’s claim for it: “Following this treatment there will normally be no need for further stylus cleaning.” That is the maker’s word; we haven’t tested it.
  • Ortofon’s FAQ advises against fluid on the stylus: “We advise against using any liquids on the stylus …”

Watch out for

  • Ortofon’s shop shows “Free Shipping on orders over €80”; at €15.99 this brush is under that, so check the shipping at checkout.
  • Bristle material, size and what comes with it are not published.

Pick 2 · Best without a brush: gel pad, no fluids needed, €29

Clearaudio Stylus Cleaner Gel (AC176)

Gel pad

A silicone gel pad in a lidded case. You lower the stylus onto it instead of brushing, and Clearaudio says it works “without the need for any fluids or friction”.

Price: €29.00 at Clearaudio’s analogshop, checked 27 Oct 2026, plus shipping. Prices change; the shop shows today’s.

  • Clearaudio’s own claims, as its words, not our test: “This low-contact cleaning method significantly reduces the risk of stylus damage and offers a safe alternative to brushes and liquids for fast, everyday use.”

Watch out for

  • Shipping is extra: €5.90 per order within Germany and Austria, and €15.00 and €19.00 to the other countries on Clearaudio’s list we show (its list). Shipping by country.
  • The 53 × 53 × 17 mm Clearaudio gives is the case with its lid, not the pad.
  • Clearaudio’s shop page calls it “Stylus Cleaner Gel”; its description calls it the “Stylus Cleaner Pad”. Same product, item number AC176.
  • How many uses before the pad needs replacing is not published.

Pick 3 · Best if you want a fluid: 10 ml with applicator brush, €32

Clearaudio Elixir of Sound (AC003)

Fluid

A 10 ml stylus cleaning fluid with its own applicator brush, for buyers who want a liquid, sold in euros from Clearaudio’s own shop in Germany. Before you buy any fluid, read what your cartridge’s maker says about liquids: Ortofon’s FAQ, for one, advises against them on the stylus.

Price: €32.00 at Clearaudio’s analogshop, checked 27 Oct 2026, plus shipping. Prices change; the shop shows today’s.

  • Clearaudio’s claim: “This cleaner eliminates dirt and dust of all kinds on the stylus.” and “Gentle, highly effective and extremely economical.” Its words; we haven’t tested it.
  • Clearaudio pairs it with a brush of its own: its Diamond cleaner brush is “The ideal complement to the liquid stylus cleaner “Elixir of Sound”” (sold separately).

Watch out for

  • Shipping is extra: €5.90 per order within Germany and Austria, and €15.00 and €19.00 to the other countries on Clearaudio’s list we show (its list). Shipping by country.

  • Ortofon’s FAQ: “We advise against using any liquids on the stylus …” Check your own cartridge maker’s advice first.
  • The shop shows its general liquids safety text with it (the same text is on Clearaudio’s Clear Contact page): “This product may cause eye irritation. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with clear water.” “Prolonged contact may cause skin irritation.” “May cause bronchial irritation. Use only in well-ventilated areas.” “Do not drink!” “Keep away from sources of ignition – Do not smoke!” Clearaudio doesn’t say what Elixir of Sound contains.

Electronic

A battery-powered cleaning unit with a pad and a 10 ml bottle of fluid. It is Walvis Products B.V.’s own-brand cleaner, sold on its own shop; the shop’s spec table gives its origin as CN (China). Walvis publishes step-by-step instructions for it (below).

Pick 5 · Best on a tight budget: carbon-fibre brush, €9.99

Pro-Ject Clean it

Brush

A carbon-fibre stylus brush with the lowest of the five maker prices here (Goldring’s shop showed none), from Pro-Ject’s own EU shop. Pro-Ject says it is “suitable for daily cleaning of the stylus”, but publishes no steps or stroke direction.

Pick 6 · Best all-in-one kit: gel pot, brush and 10x magnifier

Goldring EXTRACT Stylus Cleaning Kit

Gel and brush kit

A kit rather than a single tool: a gel pot, an anti-static stylus brush and a 10x magnifying lens in one storage box. Goldring publishes how to use both the gel and the brush.

Price: Goldring’s shop showed no price on our visit (27 Oct 2026).

Illustration, not a photo: we found no licensed photo of the Goldring EXTRACT Stylus Cleaning Kit on Wikimedia Commons or Unsplash. Drawn in plain shapes from the maker’s description; not to scale.

Why it suits

  • The gel, in Goldring’s words: “just place the pot on your turntable platter and lower the stylus onto the gel, lifting the stylus again and repeating if necessary.”
  • The brush, for loose fluff: “Horizontally draw the brush gently across the stylus from back to front, applying as little upward pressure as possible.”
  • A 10x lens to see the tip: Goldring gives “a 10x magnification power”.
  • Goldring says of its kit: “Working seamlessly with all stylus and cartridge types”. Its words for its own kit; check your cartridge maker’s advice too.

Watch out for

  • Where to buy: on 27 Oct 2026 Goldring’s shop page hid its buy box for our visit and showed only a DEALER LOCATOR button, so we can’t show a price. We don’t know whether UK visitors see one.
  • The gel wears with dirt, per Goldring: “The gel pot will become less effective if allowed to get contaminated over time.” It says rinsing under water and letting it air dry refreshes it.
  • How many uses and the gel’s make-up are not published.

How we picked

  • One method per pick, covering all four: a fibre brush for every side (pick 1), a gel pad (pick 2), a fluid (pick 3), an electronic cleaner (pick 4), a lower-priced brush (pick 5) and a kit with gel, brush and lens (pick 6).
  • Made for a stylus, with instructions. Each maker says it is for cleaning a stylus. Four publish how to use it; Clearaudio (for Elixir of Sound) and Pro-Ject (for Clean it) don’t, and their sections say so.
  • Instructions only in the maker’s own words. How-to steps are each maker’s own, for its own product; cartridge makers’ general advice is quoted as theirs.
  • Prices from the maker’s own shop. On 27 Oct 2026: Ortofon’s shop on ortofon.com, in euros; Clearaudio’s analogshop (run by Clearaudio electronic GmbH; legal notice); Walvis Products B.V.’s own shop, for its own-brand cleaner; Pro-Ject’s EU shop (run by Pro-Ject’s company, Audio Tuning Vertriebs GmbH; imprint). Goldring’s UK shop showed no price on our visit, and we don’t show dealers’ prices. Prices change, so the shop link shows today’s.
  • Shop links go to the maker’s page for that exact model, plus Thomann for Pro-Ject Clean it.

We have not used or measured these for this guide, and we don’t give scores. Where Max has used one himself, his notes will appear under that pick. The full method is on How we pick.

Questions

Which way should I brush my stylus?

Follow your brush’s maker. Ortofon, for its brush (pick 1): “Use the brush in the forward direction from the rear of the cartridge toward the stylus tip and never from stylus tip to the rear of the cartridge and never from side to side.” Goldring, for the brush in its kit (pick 6): “Horizontally draw the brush gently across the stylus from back to front, applying as little upward pressure as possible.” Pro-Ject publishes no direction for Clean it (pick 5).

How often should I clean it?

Ortofon: “Please remember to remove dust from the diamond tip before and after playback of each record.” For its brush it says “whenever you play a new record or change sides”. Pro-Ject calls Clean it “suitable for daily cleaning of the stylus”. Clearaudio says its gel is “for fast, everyday use”. Goldring recommends “a daily check” of the stylus, then its brush for “dry loose fluff” and its gel if “sticky deposits” remain.

Can I use alcohol or a cleaning fluid?

Ask your cartridge’s maker first. Ortofon: “Ortofon do not recommend the use of solvents of any kind for cleaning of either record surface or stylus.” and its warranty doesn’t cover damage from solvents (Ortofon FAQ). Clearaudio (pick 3) and Walvis (pick 4) don’t publish what their fluids contain.

Will a gel pad suit my cartridge?

Check your cartridge’s manual. Clearaudio names no cartridges for its gel (pick 2). Goldring says of its own kit (pick 6): “Working seamlessly with all stylus and cartridge types”. Both have you lower the stylus onto the gel.

Walvis calls its cleaner “ultrasonic”: what does that mean?

In Walvis’s words: “This Electronic Stylus Cleaner makes ultrasonic cleaning affordable for every record lover!” It gives no frequency, and we haven’t measured it.

Does cleaning fix a worn stylus?

Cleaning removes dirt, not wear. Ortofon names dust as one cause of distortion and a worn or damaged stylus as another; with the wear symptoms it describes, it says the stylus “likely needs replacement”. See dirty or worn out.
