Best turntable mats

Which mat should replace your turntable’s felt mat, and how thick is it next to your old one? Thickness changes the tonearm height. Start with cork (pick 1, 1.5 mm) or leather (pick 2, 2 mm), both sold to replace felt; keep your old mat’s thickness unless your tonearm height adjusts, as Audio-Technica advises.

Specs and prices from the makers’ own pages, read 27 Oct 2026; damping and static claims are the makers’. Plain shop links; they may earn us a commission later. How we pick

What a mat does

It sits between the platter and the record. Audio-Technica: “The majority of Audio-Technica turntables come with a platter mat. Its purpose is to soak up any unwanted vibrations that may affect the sound quality, potentially resulting in distortion.” (Audio-Technica). Mats come in “felt, cork, rubber, leather and acrylic”, among others, and Audio-Technica says “Which mat you choose depends on personal preference as vinyl enthusiasts have different opinions as to what sounds best on their system.” (Audio-Technica)

Pro-Ject, which sells three of the mats here, makes its case against felt and rubber in its own product copy: “Common felt mats give a smooth contact between record and platter but has the disadvantage with static.” And: “Thick rubbermats overdamp the record and have an isolation effect which leaves the static on the record and hearable noise clicks are the result.” (Pro-Ject). Those are a maker’s own claims, not test results, and we haven’t tested any mat either.

Thickness and tonearm height

Stock mats are made to a thickness for a reason. For its own turntables, Audio-Technica says: “The felt mat that comes with Audio-Technica turntables is 2.5mm.” Its rubber mats are 3 mm (AT-LPW range), 4.5 mm (AT-LP3, AT-LP2X) and 5 mm (AT-LP5X), and “They are manufactured to these specific thicknesses so the tonearm is parallel to the vinyl when a record is being played” (Audio-Technica). Those figures are for Audio-Technica turntables; for any other, check its manual or measure the mat you have.

So when you change mats, Audio-Technica’s advice: “If you are wishing to change your platter mat then it is advisable to source one that is the same thickness, unless your tonearm has VTA (vertical tracking adjustment) like the AT-LP140XP.” If your arm does adjust: “Make sure that you adjust the height of the tonearm so it remains parallel to the vinyl during playback if switching between different thicknesses of platter mat.” Ortofon, a cartridge maker, names “thickness of the slipmat or the rubmat” among the things that set the right height, and says: “Adjust the height ring found at the base of the tonearm until the bottom tonearm itself is parallel to the record during playback.” (Ortofon).

The six picks, thinnest first, as their makers publish them, with each maker’s own tonearm note where it gives one:

  • Pro-Ject Cork & Rubber it (1 mm)Pick 3 · Pro-Ject: the thin one for dense or heavy platters; no tonearm note on this mat’s page1 mm
  • Pro-Ject Cork itPick 1 · tonearm: Pro-Ject’s 1.5 mm VTA it arm spacer, for the Debut and Essential models it lists (standard configurations only)1.5 mm
  • Pro-Ject Leather itPick 2 · tonearm: Pro-Ject’s 1.5 mm VTA it arm spacer for upgrade mats, on the Debut and Essential models it lists; none on this mat’s page2 mm
  • clearaudio Vinyl Harmo-nicerPick 4 · tonearm: Re-adjust the tonearm height, per clearaudioup to 2.4 mm
  • Audio-Technica’s stock felt matfor comparison: on Audio-Technica turntables that come with one2.5 mm
  • Pro-Ject Cork & Rubber it (3 mm)Pick 3 · Pro-Ject: the thick one for thin metal platters; no tonearm note on this mat’s page3 mm
  • Hudson Hi-Fi Acrylic Turntable Mat 1/8" ThickPick 6 · no tonearm note from the maker3 mm
  • The Funk Firm APMPick 5 · tonearm: On Rega decks with fixed-height arms: Rega Spacer Kit where needed, per The Funk Firm5 mm

Thickness as each maker publishes it, checked 27 Oct 2026; Cork & Rubber it comes in both 1 mm and 3 mm. Bars to scale. Audio-Technica’s 2.5 mm is its figure for the felt mat that comes with its own turntables, not anyone else’s.

Size: about 30 cm across

A 12-inch LP is 301.6 mm across (± 0.8 mm), by the RIAA’s 1978 standard for records (RIAA Bulletin E4, scan hosted by the Boston Audio Society). The six mats here are 292 mm (clearaudio), 297 mm (The Funk Firm), 298.5 mm (Hudson Hi-Fi) and 300 mm (Pro-Ject Cork it, Leather it and Cork & Rubber it) across, as their makers publish; we found no standard size for mats. None of the six makers publishes the size of the centre hole.

Some platters are meant to run without one

It depends on the turntable, so check its manual. Pro-Ject’s manual for the 1 Xpression Classic S-Shape: “We recommend to use the record player without a mat on the platter.” (Pro-Ject manual). For its 1 Xpression Carbon Classic, the opposite: “We recommend to use the record player with a mat on the platter.” (Pro-Ject manual). Pro-Ject’s acrylic replacement platter, Acryl it, is made to be used bare: “Unlike metal platters, where you will need to place a felt met [sic] between record and platter to damp metal resonance, you can put your record directly on the acrylic surface, with nothing in between.” (Pro-Ject).

Others ship with a mat and tell you to use it. Rega’s Planar 3 guide: “Carefully place the glass platter on the hub and fit the turntable mat.” (Rega). Technics’ SL-1200G manual: “Lay the turntable mat on the turntable.” (Technics).

DJ slipmats

DJs want the opposite of grip. Audio-Technica: “DJs have an additional requirement as they want to let the platter move underneath them when the record is being held in place for the start of a mix, or spun backwards to find the correct starting point. DJs typically use felt mats as other materials won’t allow the platter to move freely beneath them.” (Audio-Technica). Technics’ manual for its SL-1200M7G DJ turntable has you lay a slipmat and a slip sheet on the platter, and says: “A record on the rotating turntable can be stopped manually as well as rotated in reverse.” (Technics).

No slipmat met our rules, so there is no DJ pick. The DJ slipmats we looked at, from Ortofon and Serato, publish no thickness. The Funk Firm APM (pick 5) is listed by The Funk Firm for the Technics SL-1200 MkII–VII, SL-1200G and SL-1200GAE, but it is an 850 g mat on a glass sub-plate, not a slipmat, and The Funk Firm says nothing about cueing on it.

The picks in detail

Each pick says what it suits and what to watch for, from the maker’s own pages and the dated, sourced notes listed under it. Where a maker doesn’t publish a spec, we say so. Claims about damping, static and sound are the makers’, quoted as theirs; we haven’t tested them.

Pick 1 · Best for replacing a felt mat: cork, 1.5 mm thick, €25

Pro-Ject Cork it

Cork mat 1.5 mm thick, per the maker

A thin cork mat that Pro-Ject sells to replace a felt mat. It comes first because it is the most direct answer here: Pro-Ject publishes its size and thickness, says it “Substitutes felt mats”, and sells it from its own EU shop.

Price: €25.00 at Pro-Ject’s EU shop, checked 27 Oct 2026, plus shipping. Prices change; the shop shows today’s.

illustration, not a photo
Illustration, not a photo: Wikimedia Commons has no photo of this mat. Drawn in plain shapes from the maker’s published size and description; the edge shows its thickness, exaggerated.

Why it suits

  • Made to replace felt, in Pro-Ject’s words: “Substitutes felt mats” and “Suitable for all turntables”.
  • Both sizes published: 300 mm across and 1.5 mm thick (Pro-Ject writes “1,5 mm”).
  • Pro-Ject’s case for cork, in words it uses for leather and cork mats alike: “Resonances are damped more effectively than felt, they keep dust away and they have also enough contactivity to avoid static.” That is the maker’s claim; we haven’t tested it.
  • Sold by Pro-Ject’s own EU shop, which says “The products are delivered to all countries in the European Union.” Its shipping list names every EU country except Ireland. MediaMarkt Belgium lists the same model too.

Watch out for

  • Shipping is extra. Pro-Ject’s shop charges a flat rate per country (its list), from €7.90 (Austria) to €51.90 (Cyprus and Malta): €12.90 to Germany, €17.90 to Belgium and the Netherlands, €19.90 to France. Every rate on Pro-Ject’s list.
  • Pro-Ject sells VTA it, a “1,5mm tonearm spacer”, so owners of the Debut and Essential models it lists (standard configurations only) can “Use thicker upgrade mats like Cork it”: on those decks the tonearm may need raising (our reading). Pro-Ject adds: “The installation of “VTA it“ should be done by an experienced technician. Unauthorized installations void the warranty.”
  • Weight, centre hole and label recess are not published.

Pro-Ject Leather it (Black or Grey)

Leather mat 2 mm thick, per the maker

The same job as pick 1, in leather: Pro-Ject sells it to replace a felt mat, in one thickness, at one price in either finish. Pro-Ject makes the same case for leather as for cork, so choose by material and price.

Price: €49.00 at Pro-Ject’s EU shop, checked 27 Oct 2026, plus shipping. Prices change; the shop shows today’s.

Why it suits

  • Made to replace felt, in Pro-Ject’s words: “Substitutes felt mats” and “Suitable for all turntables”.
  • Published size: “Compatible with platter diameter 300 mm” and 2 mm thick; Pro-Ject’s product sheet gives “Diameter: 300 mm” for the mat itself.
  • Pro-Ject on leather and cork mats, in its words and spelling: “A very costeffectiv way to improve the sound and have less noise by static and dust. You can hear a difference!” We haven’t tested it.
  • Two finishes at the same price, Black and Grey, as Pro-Ject’s shop lists them. MediaMarkt Austria lists the black one.

Watch out for

Why it suits

  • Two thicknesses, 1 mm or 3 mm, both 300 mm across; Pro-Ject says it “Fits all turntables”.
  • Pro-Ject’s own advice on which to choose: the 3 mm mat for thin metal platters, the 1 mm mat for dense or heavy ones.
  • Pro-Ject’s claim, in its words: “Cork & Rubber-it uses a carefully blended mix of cork and rubber to offer the ultimate acoustic control of rubber alongside the anti-static properties of cork”. We haven’t tested it.
  • Pro-Ject on felt: “Standard felt mats have poor anti-static characteristics, which attracts dust to your precious vinyl. They are often too thin for effective acoustic control of platters, especially those made from metal.”

Pick 4 · Best for a vinyl mat: up to 2.4 mm thick, 190 g, €90

clearaudio Vinyl Harmo-nicer (AC082)

Vinyl mat Up to 2.4 mm thick, per the maker

A mat made of vinyl, sold by clearaudio’s own German shop, which ships to the EU countries on its shipping list (Sweden isn’t on it). clearaudio publishes its size, thickness and weight, and tells you in its own words to re-set the tonearm for its thickness.

Price: €90.00 at clearaudio’s analogshop, checked 27 Oct 2026, plus shipping. Prices change; the shop shows today’s.

illustration, not a photo
Illustration, not a photo: Wikimedia Commons has no photo of this mat. Drawn in plain shapes from the maker’s published size and description; the edge shows its thickness, exaggerated.

Why it suits

  • Fully published: “Outer diameter: 292 mm”, “Maximum Thickness: 2,4 mm” and “Weight: 190 g”.
  • clearaudio’s tonearm advice, in its words and spelling: “you should re-adjust the VTA (Vertical-Tracking-Angle), accordingly to the trickness of the Harmo-nicer”.
  • clearaudio’s claim, in its words: “This new turntable mat, made out of pure vinyl, will improve the contact between the platter surface and the LP.” It says the underside is “absulutely flat and polished” and “the top surface of Harmo-nicer mat has a special surface structure”. We haven’t tested it.
  • The price includes German VAT: clearaudio’s shop says “All prices are inclusive german value-added tax of 19”%.

Watch out for

  • Shipping: €5.90 per order within Germany and Austria; a footnote on the shop’s page, marked against debit-order payment, says it charges no shipping on goods of €50 or more, so check the total at checkout; €15 or €19 to most other countries on its list (€46 to the Balearic Islands), free from €500. Sweden isn’t on the list.
  • clearaudio names no turntables it fits. “A genius development to improve any turntable sound quality.” is its claim about sound, not a list of decks.
  • clearaudio’s best case needs more of its own gear: “Highest performace will be achieved if you are using the Clearaudio Outer Limit, Clearaudio Locator and a Clearaudio Record Clamp” (its words and spelling).
  • The shop page shows a Cart button but no stock wording we could read.

Pick 5 · Best for named decks, lipped or flat platters: 5 mm thick, 850 g, £220 (UK shop)

The Funk Firm APM (Advanced Platter Mat, 5 mm)

Achromat mat on a glass sub-plate 5 mm thick, per the maker

The strongest answer to “will it fit my deck?”: The Funk Firm names the turntables, from Technics SL-1200 and Pioneer PLX-1000 to Rega, Linn and Thorens, and says it “Fits all platters – lipped and flat”. It is also the thickest pick here, at 5 mm, and The Funk Firm gives its weight as 850 g.

Price: £220 at The Funk Firm (UK shop), checked 27 Oct 2026, free UK shipping over £150; outside the UK, plus shipping and any duties and import taxes. Prices change; the shop shows today’s.

Why it suits

  • Named decks, in The Funk Firm’s list: Technics SL-1200 MkII–VII, SL-1500C, SL-1200G, SL-1200GAE and SP-10R; Pioneer PLX-1000, PLX-500, PL-12D and PL-512; Rega Planar 2, Planar 3, P3, P6, P8 and P10; Linn LP12, Axis and Basik; Thorens TD150, TD160, TD166, TD124 and TD125; Garrard 401 and Goldring-Lenco GL75. “Also suitable for many models from Sony, Trio, Kenwood, Yamaha and others.”
  • Made for lipped platters as well as flat ones: “mat: 297 mm dia and glass: 285 mm dia”, and “And now APM is just 5 mm thick, it accommodates Technics' short spindles.”
  • What it is, in The Funk Firm’s terms: an “Achromat energy-dissipating structure with millions of microscopic bubbles” on a “Fully bonded glass sub-plate”. Its claim: it “Damps record vibration and platter resonance”. We haven’t tested it.

Watch out for

  • 5 mm is the thickest here. For Rega decks with fixed-height arms, The Funk Firm says: “For APM or other combinations, the Rega Spacer Kit restores correct VTA/SRA where needed.” It gives no tonearm note for the other decks it names; its general line is “If your current mat is rubber or felt, any upgrade may change effective thickness.”
  • Sold from the UK in pounds. The Funk Firm says it “Aims to deliver to Europe in 5-7 working days”, and its FAQ says: “We ship worldwide from Newhaven, East Sussex. Duties and import taxes, if any, are the buyer's responsibility and vary by country.” So EU buyers pay any duties and import taxes on top.
  • It is an 850 g mat for playing records, not a DJ slipmat: The Funk Firm says nothing about cueing on it.
  • Centre hole and label recess are not published.

Hudson Hi-Fi Acrylic Turntable Mat 1/8" Thick

Acrylic mat 3 mm thick, per the maker

The only acrylic mat that passed our checks, with a built-in label recess and its size published. It comes last because it is sold from a US shop in US dollars, and that shop doesn’t say whether it delivers to Europe.

How we picked

  • One job per pick: replacing a felt mat in cork or leather (picks 1 and 2), choosing a thickness (pick 3), a vinyl mat (pick 4), a mat for named decks with lipped or flat platters (pick 5), and acrylic (pick 6).
  • Size and thickness from the maker. Every pick’s maker publishes its diameter, about 30 cm, and its thickness, because thickness changes the tonearm height. Tonearm advice appears only in a maker’s own words.
  • No rubber or silicone mat passed. The one rubber-type mat left on our list, Fluance’s silicone mat, is out because we couldn’t confirm the dollar price on its US shop. Oyaide’s BR-12 rubber mat has no maker’s shop in the EU, UK or US. So this guide has no all-rubber or silicone mat; pick 3 is cork and rubber together.
  • Three picks are Pro-Ject’s. Pro-Ject publishes both sizes for each, sells all three from its own EU shop, and each does a different job.
  • Prices from the maker’s own shop. On 27 Oct 2026: in euros, Pro-Ject’s EU shop (run by Pro-Ject’s company, Audio Tuning Vertriebs GmbH; imprint) and clearaudio’s analogshop (run by Clearaudio electronic GmbH; legal notice); in pounds, The Funk Firm’s UK shop, because it has no EU shop and the euro figure its shop can show visitors is a currency conversion; in US dollars, Hudson Hi-Fi’s US shop. Never a retailer’s price, and no comparison across currencies. Prices change, so the shop link shows today’s.
  • Shop links go to the maker’s page for that exact model, plus MediaMarkt where we opened the page for the exact model: Cork it in Belgium and the black Leather it in Austria.

We have not used or measured these for this guide, and we don’t give scores. Where Max has used one himself, his notes will appear under that pick. The full method is on How we pick.

Questions

Will a new mat change my tonearm height?

It can, if it is thicker or thinner than your old one: Audio-Technica’s advice is a mat of the same thickness, unless your tonearm height adjusts. Three makers here say so for their own mats: clearaudio says to re-adjust for its Vinyl Harmo-nicer; The Funk Firm says, for Rega decks with fixed-height arms, “For APM or other combinations, the Rega Spacer Kit restores correct VTA/SRA where needed.”; and Pro-Ject sells VTA it, a 1.5 mm arm spacer, for the Debut and Essential models it lists (Debut I–III, Debut Carbon, Debut Carbon EVO, Debut EVO 2 and Essential I–III, standard configurations only), to “Use thicker upgrade mats like Cork it”.

How thick is my turntable’s own mat?

Audio-Technica publishes it for its own decks: 2.5 mm for the felt mat that comes with its turntables, and 3, 4.5 or 5 mm for the rubber mats of the models it names. For other turntables we found no general figure: check the manual or measure it.

Can I put a new mat on top of my felt mat?

The makers of picks 1, 2 and 6 sell them to replace it. Pro-Ject says Cork it and Leather it “Substitutes felt mats”, and Hudson Hi-Fi says: “Remove your existing rubber or felt mat before installation.” Stacking would also add both thicknesses under the record (our arithmetic).

Do I need a mat at all?

Ask your turntable’s maker. Pro-Ject recommends no mat on its 1 Xpression Classic S-Shape and a mat on its 1 Xpression Carbon Classic; Rega’s Planar 3 guide and Technics’ SL-1200G manual have you fit the mat that comes with the deck. See platters made to run without one.

Which mat for a Technics SL-1200?

The Funk Firm APM (pick 5) is the only pick whose maker names it: “Technics: SL-1200 MkII–VII, SL-1500C, SL-1200G, SL-1200GAE, SP-10R and vintage models.” The Funk Firm adds: “And now APM is just 5 mm thick, it accommodates Technics' short spindles.” Pro-Ject names no Technics model for its three mats. For DJ use, see DJ slipmats.

Which mat for a Rega?

The Funk Firm lists “Rega: Planar 2, Planar 3, P3, P6, P8, P10 and more.” for the APM, and says “For APM or other combinations, the Rega Spacer Kit restores correct VTA/SRA where needed.” (The Funk Firm). Rega’s own Planar 3 guide has you fit the turntable mat on the glass platter.

What does Pro-Ject charge for shipping?

A flat rate per country, on top of the price, for picks 1, 2 and 3. Pro-Ject: “The products are delivered to all countries in the European Union.” Its rates on 27 Oct 2026, including VAT (Pro-Ject’s payment and dispatch page):

Can I buy the APM or the Hudson mat in the EU?

The Funk Firm sells from the UK in pounds and says it “Aims to deliver to Europe in 5-7 working days”; its FAQ: “We ship worldwide from Newhaven, East Sussex. Duties and import taxes, if any, are the buyer's responsibility and vary by country.” (The Funk Firm). Hudson Hi-Fi sells from a US shop in US dollars, and on 27 Oct 2026 its pages didn’t say whether it delivers to Europe.

How do I keep a mat clean?

For felt, Audio-Technica: “If the felt mat gets dirty, it can easily scratch the record, so remove the felt mat periodically and wipe off any dust.” (Audio-Technica manual). clearaudio says “The Harmo-nicer can be cleaned like a normal record” (clearaudio). The other makers here don’t say.
