Best vinyl record storage
Will my 12-inch records fit, and how many will it hold? A sleeve is about 31.4 cm square; each row says what fits and how many from the makers’ own figures; the KALLAX fit is our estimate from IKEA’s insert.
Every spec and price links to the maker’s own pages, read on 27 Oct 2026; for Crosley, that is its EU shop, run by its distributor, plus its US page. Shop links are plain links; they may earn us a commission later. How we pick
Will it fit? A sleeve is about 31.4 cm
A 12-inch LP jacket is 12.375 inches square when finished, by the template of the record-jacket printer Coral Graphics: “Final Size: 12.375" x .25" spine x 12.375"” (Coral Graphics). That’s about 31.4 cm (our conversion). So a compartment, box or shelf needs a little more than 31.4 cm of height for sleeves to stand upright, and as much depth for them to sit fully inside. Lundia says it about its own 30 cm deep shelves: “30 cm syvä hyllytaso on LP-levyä matalampi” (a 30 cm deep shelf level is shallower than an LP; Lundia).
- Inside sizeThe clearest answer. UDG and Zomo publish one for the case and the box; for the KALLAX, IKEA gives the size of the inserts made to fit it.
- The maker’s wordCrosley and Zomo’s wall rack publish no inside size, and Lundia gives only the shelf width and depth, not the height between levels. All three say their shelves take records: Crosley with counts of records and albums, Zomo with “Format: LPs” and a count, Lundia in words.
- Record count4 of the six makers give one. IKEA gives a load limit instead; Lundia gives neither.
Store them upright. The Library of Congress says “Store all formats upright: discs and reels on edge” and recommends “sturdy, immovable dividers every 4-6 inches” (about 10 to 15 cm, our conversion) along a shelf (Library of Congress). The ARSC Guide to Audio Preservation adds dividers “throughout each shelf to prevent items from leaning and to provide extra weight-bearing support” (ARSC Guide). Not too loose or too tight, either: Duke University’s archivists say records in a box should stand “without excessive leaning”, with “only a finger’s width of space, enough to make out the ID label when flipping through the discs” (Duke University Libraries), and the ARSC Guide wants a box that “is fully filled or includes a space filler, and allows easy removal of discs” (ARSC Guide).
How much records weigh
A standard 12-inch record weighs about 140 g on its own: “Standard weight for a 12” record averages around 140 gram”, says the disc maker Oasis (Oasis). With sleeves, two members of the mailing list of the ARSC (Association for Recorded Sound Collections) gave figures in 2006. One weighed 20 LPs “on the kitchen scales”: “20 LPs, 3 inches thick, weight 11 pounds.” (ARSC list). Another gave a rule of thumb: “For older LPs in the sleeves, about 45 lbs per 100 is right.” (ARSC list). That comes to roughly 200 to 250 g per LP, or about 20 to 25 kg per 100 LPs: our conversion of two informal figures, not a standard. The same 20 LPs were 3 inches thick: about 26 LPs per 10 cm of shelf (our arithmetic).
On a shelf it adds up. The Library of Congress says grooved discs “average 35+ pounds per shelf-foot” (about 52 kg per metre, our conversion) and that the weight sits on the centreline of a shelf, “which can cause some shelving to collapse” (Library of Congress).
| Pick | Records, per the maker | Their weight (our estimate) | Maker’s load limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| IKEA KALLAX 77x147 cm | No LP count | About 17 to 22 kg per full compartment (our estimate), over IKEA’s 13 kg per shelf | 13 kg per shelf; 25 kg on the top |
| Zomo VS-Box 100/1 | 100 to 120 | 20–30 kg | not published |
| Crosley Asheville Medium | 65 + 150 | 13–16 kg + 30–38 kg | 35 lb (about 16 kg) + 75 lb (about 34 kg) |
| UDG Ultimate Record Case 80 Vinyl | About 80 | 16–20 kg, plus 3.13 kg for the case | not published |
| Zomo VS-Rack Wall | 20 to 30 | 4–7.5 kg | not published |
| Lundia Classic LP shelf | No LP count | Can’t estimate without a count | not published |
Records and limits as each maker publishes them, checked 27 Oct 2026. Weights are our estimate at 200 to 250 g per LP in its sleeve; heavier pressings and gatefolds weigh more. Crosley’s 35 and 75 lb limits are from its US page; the kg figures are our conversion.
Shelves and wall racks: check the limit, not just the size. IKEA rates each KALLAX shelf at 13 kg and warns: “WARNING! Tipping hazard – this product must be securely anchored.” Crosley gives a limit for every shelf of the Asheville, in pounds. Zomo publishes no load rating for its wall rack or the wall mount, and UDG and Lundia publish none either.
The picks in detail
Each pick says what it suits and what to watch for, using the published specs and the dated, sourced notes listed under it. Where a maker doesn’t publish a spec, we say so rather than fill it in. Our own arithmetic is labelled an estimate.
Pick 1 · Best for a growing collection: cube shelving, 13 kg per shelf, 39 cm deep, €49.99
IKEA KALLAX 77x147 cm (white, 802.758.87)
Cube shelving
Cube shelving that takes LPs upright in every compartment and grows with the collection: the same compartments come in smaller and bigger units. IKEA publishes a load limit instead of a record count, and warns that the unit must be anchored.
Price on the maker’s shop: €49.99 at IKEA Netherlands, checked 27 Oct 2026. Prices change; the shop shows today’s.

Why it suits
- €49.99 for a 76.5 × 146.5 cm unit of shelving, at IKEA Netherlands on 27 Oct 2026.
- Each compartment takes LPs upright, by our estimate: the inserts IKEA makes for them are 33 × 33 cm, against a sleeve of about 31.4 cm.
- 39 cm deep overall, and IKEA’s inserts for the compartments are 37 cm deep, so sleeves sit fully inside (our estimate).
- Stands upright or lies on its side as a low sideboard, IKEA says.
- The same unit comes as 77x77 cm (€29.99) and 147x147 cm (€99.99), each rated 13 kg per shelf, at IKEA Netherlands on 27 Oct 2026.
Watch out for
- IKEA publishes no LP count, only a limit of 13 kg per shelf and 25 kg on the top. See how much records weigh, below.
- By our estimate a compartment packed with LPs weighs about 17 to 22 kg (the Library of Congress’s 35+ lb per shelf-foot, or about 86 LPs at 200 to 250 g), more than IKEA’s 13 kg per shelf however IKEA counts a shelf. Don’t pack every cube full; keep heavy box sets elsewhere.
- IKEA warns of a tipping hazard: “this product must be securely anchored.”
- Particleboard and fibreboard with a paper honeycomb filling, not solid wood.
- Open compartments: a door means buying a KALLAX insert.
Published specs
- Records it holds, per the maker
- not published (IKEA gives a load limit instead)
- Inside size
- Not published for the unit. IKEA’s KALLAX insert, “Dimensioned to fit KALLAX shelving unit”, is 33 cm wide and 33 cm high, so each compartment is at least 33 × 33 cm (our estimate)
- Fits a 12-inch sleeve? (our reading)
- Yes, by our estimate: IKEA’s KALLAX inserts, made to fit the compartments, are 33 × 33 cm, so there is at least about 1.6 cm to spare over a 31.4 cm sleeve in height and width, and the inserts are 37 cm deep (the unit is 39 cm deep overall).
- Load rating
- 13 kg per shelf; 25 kg on the top
- Outer size
- 76.5 W × 39 D × 146.5 H cm
- Material
- Particleboard and fibreboard with a recycled paper honeycomb filling, acrylic paint, plastic edging
- Setting it up
- Stands upright or lies on its side as a sideboard. IKEA’s warning: “WARNING! Tipping hazard – this product must be securely anchored.”
- Price on the maker’s shop
- €49.99 at IKEA Netherlands, checked 27 Oct 2026
- IKEA Netherlands: KALLAX shelving unit, white, 77x147 cm: price, record count (not published), load rating, outer size, material, setup. Checked 27 Oct 2026.
- IKEA Netherlands: KALLAX insert with door: inside size. Checked 27 Oct 2026.
- IKEA Netherlands: KALLAX shelving unit, white, 77x77 cm: the 77x77 cm size and its price. Checked 27 Oct 2026.
- IKEA Netherlands: KALLAX shelving unit, white, 147x147 cm: the 147x147 cm size and its price. Checked 27 Oct 2026.
Pick 2 · Best record box: open top, holds 100 to 120 LPs, €42
Zomo VS-Box 100/1 (black)
Record box
An open-top MDF box for a sideboard or a shelf, made for flipping through 12-inch records. Zomo publishes both the inside width and depth and a record count.
Price on the maker’s shop: €42.00 at Zomo shop Germany, checked 27 Oct 2026. Prices change; the shop shows today’s.
Why it suits
- Zomo says it holds 100 to 120 LPs: “Kapazität für 100 bis 120 LPs”.
- 330 × 320 mm inside, and Zomo says the inside also takes records in outer protective sleeves (“Innenmaße passend auch für Platten in Schutzhüllen”).
- Open at the top for flipping through, which Zomo builds it for (“Offene Struktur für schnelles Durchblättern der Sammlung”: open structure for flipping through the collection quickly).
- €42.00 at Zomo’s German shop on 27 Oct 2026: with the wall rack (pick 5), the lowest price of the six.
Watch out for
- Open top: it doesn’t keep dust off the sleeves.
- Needs assembly, which Zomo calls simple and quick (“Einfache und zügige Montage”).
- No load rating published.
- Zomo’s product page lists the height as 260 mm, its manual as 205 mm, so check the height if it goes on a shelf.
- Zomo’s spec table also says 100-150; we use the 100 to 120 from its feature list.
Published specs
- Records it holds, per the maker
- 100 to 120 LPs
- Inside size
- 330 W × 320 D mm; fits records in outer protective sleeves too, Zomo says. Inside height left out: the page lists it the same as the outside height
- Fits a 12-inch sleeve? (our reading)
- Yes, upright: the 330 mm inside width leaves about 1.6 cm beside a 31.4 cm sleeve, and the 320 mm depth is also more than a sleeve (our estimate). The top is open, so sleeves stand up above the walls; that’s the design, for flipping.
- Load rating
- not published
- Outer size
- 360 W × 335 D mm; height 260 mm on the product page, 205 mm in Zomo’s manual
- Material
- MDF with a laminated, water-repellent finish
- Setting it up
- Open at the top for flipping through; needs assembly, which Zomo calls simple and quick
- Price on the maker’s shop
- €42.00 at Zomo shop Germany, checked 27 Oct 2026
- Zomo shop Germany: VS-Box 100/1, black: price, record count, inside size, load rating (not published), outer size, material, setup, the spec table’s “100-150”. Checked 27 Oct 2026.
- Zomo VS-Box 100/1 user manual (PDF): outer size. Checked 27 Oct 2026.
Pick 3 · Best turntable stand with storage: up to 65 + 150 records
Crosley Asheville Medium (walnut, CF1147-WA)
Stand with storage
A stand for the turntable with record storage built in: a crate-style shelf to flip through, a shelf for an amplifier and a lower shelf for the rest. It’s the only pick whose maker gives a record count for its record shelves and a load limit for every shelf.
Price on the maker’s shop: €299.00 at Crosley’s EU shop (crosleyradio.eu, run by its distributor SF Distributions BV), checked 27 Oct 2026. Prices change; the shop shows today’s.
Why it suits
- Turntable, amplifier and records in one piece: the top takes up to 50 lb, and the shelf below it 20 lb for an amplifier, receiver or preamp.
- Flip through up to 65 records in the crate-style upper shelf; up to 150 albums fit on the lower shelf.
- The only pick whose maker gives a record count for its record shelves and a load limit for every shelf.
- Tapered legs with adjustable levellers for uneven floors.
Watch out for
- Crosley publishes no inside sizes, so the fit rests on its record counts.
- Load limits are in pounds: 50 lb is about 23 kg, 20 lb about 9 kg, 35 lb about 16 kg and 75 lb about 34 kg (our conversion). The 35 and 75 lb limits are on Crosley’s US page only.
- By our estimate a full lower shelf of 150 LPs weighs 30 to 38 kg, around its 75 lb (about 34 kg) limit, so heavy box sets are better kept elsewhere.
- Outside the continental US and Canada, Crosley points buyers to local authorised distributors. Its International page lists SF Distributors for the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Finland and Norway, Urban Outfitters and SF Distributors for Sweden, Lasgo UK for the UK and Urban Outfitters for Ireland. SF Distributors has the same phone number and email domain as SF Distributions BV, which runs crosleyradio.eu.
- No assembly manual on the EU page: its Manual tab says “Geen handleiding beschikbaar” (no manual available).
Published specs
- Records it holds, per the maker
- Up to 65 records on the crate-style upper shelf; up to 150 albums on the lower shelf
- Inside size
- not published
- Fits a 12-inch sleeve? (our reading)
- Probably, by our reading: Crosley counts 65 records and 150 albums but publishes no inside sizes, so we can’t give the clearance.
- Load rating
- Top: up to 50 lb; component shelf: 20 lb; crate shelf: 35 lb; lower shelf: 75 lb (Crosley’s figures, in pounds)
- Outer size
- 40.64 × 82.55 × 78.74 cm (L × W × H, as Crosley lists it)
- Material

- Crosley Radio Europe: Impressum: who runs the EU shop. Checked 27 Oct 2026.
- Crosley: International distributors: Crosley’s authorised distributors. Checked 27 Oct 2026.
Pick 4 · Best closed case: up to about 80 LPs, foam-lined aluminium, €74.95
UDG Ultimate Record Case 80 Vinyl (black, U93017BL)
Closed case
An aluminium case lined with foam that closes over the sleeves, for carrying records to a gig or keeping them shut away. UDG publishes its inside size, so the fit is clear.
Price on the maker’s shop: €74.95 at UDG Gear (EU shop), checked 27 Oct 2026. Prices change; the shop shows today’s.
Why it suits
- The only pick that closes over the sleeves: aluminium, fully lined with high-density foam, with a butterfly lock.
- UDG publishes the inside size, 33.0 × 34.0 × 27.5 cm, so a sleeve stands upright inside.
- A carry handle for taking records to a gig, and rubber feet for standing it upright.
- €74.95 at UDG’s EU shop, which ships from the Netherlands, checked 27 Oct 2026.
Watch out for
- Holds about 80, and fewer with thick sleeves: UDG says capacity depends on the thickness of the records and their packaging.
- UDG’s page showed “Low stock” on 27 Oct 2026.
- No load rating published.
- It weighs 3.13 kg empty (UDG); 80 LPs add roughly 16 to 20 kg more (our estimate from two informal figures).
Published specs
- Records it holds, per the maker
- Up to about 80 LPs, depending on the thickness of the records and their packaging
- Inside size
- 33.0 W × 34.0 H × 27.5 D cm
- Fits a 12-inch sleeve? (our reading)
- Yes, fully enclosed: 33.0 cm wide and 34.0 cm high inside leaves about 1.6 cm of width and 2.6 cm of height over a 31.4 cm sleeve (our estimate).
- Load rating
- not published
- Outer size
- 35.0 W × 36.0 H × 29.5 D cm
- Material
- Aluminium, fully lined with high-density foam
- Setting it up
- Lid on metal hinges with a butterfly lock; carry handle; rubber feet for standing it upright

- UDG Gear EU shop: Ultimate Record Case 80 Vinyl: price, record count, inside size, load rating (not published), outer size, material, setup, weight, “Low stock” and where it ships from. Checked 27 Oct 2026.
Pick 5 · Best wall rack: holds 20 to 30 records, €42 in black
Zomo VS-Rack Wall (black)
Wall rack
A steel rack on the wall for the 20 to 30 records you’re playing now, where there’s no floor space. The frame lifts off its wall mount, and Zomo says it can stand on the floor too.
Price on the maker’s shop: €42.00 (black) at Zomo shop Germany, checked 27 Oct 2026. Prices change; the shop shows today’s.
Why it suits
- Records on the wall instead of the floor: Zomo says it holds 20 to 30, depending on how thick they are.
- The frame lifts off its wall mount without tools, and Zomo says it can also stand straight on the floor.
- Powder-coated steel, 256 mm wide and 120 mm deep.
- €42.00 in black at Zomo’s German shop on 27 Oct 2026.
Watch out for
- Zomo publishes no load rating for the rack or its wall mount. By our estimate, 30 LPs weigh about 6 to 7.5 kg.
- Zomo’s page gives two capacities: 20 to 30 records in its features, up to 50 in its spec table. We use the lower figure.
- The €42.00 is the black price; white showed “This option is currently unavailable” when we checked.
- Holds the fewest records of the four picks that publish a count.
Published specs
- Records it holds, per the maker
- 20 to 30 records (LPs), depending on the thickness of the vinyl
- Inside size
- not published
- Fits a 12-inch sleeve? (our reading)

Pick 6 · Premium solid-wood pick: pine LP shelf, 40 cm deep, made in Finland, €877
Lundia Classic LP shelf (white lacquered, A4929)
Solid-wood shelf
Open shelving in solid Finnish pine with two long levels sized for LPs, made to order in Finland. It can be widened later with another ladder and more shelves.
Price on the maker’s shop: €877.00 at Lundia (Finland), checked 27 Oct 2026. Prices change; the shop shows today’s. Lundia’s webshop sells to customers in Finland, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Italy, Austria, Great Britain, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Slovakia, Greece, Cyprus, Luxemburg, Malta, Romania and Norway, not Germany (Lundia terms, checked 27 Oct 2026).
Why it suits
- Solid Finnish pine, made in Finland: “Lundia Classic valmistetaan Suomessa suomalaisesta massiivimännystä” (Lundia Classic is made in Finland from solid Finnish pine).
- Two LP levels, 40 cm deep: “Hylly on 40 cm syvä” (the shelf is 40 cm deep), more than a sleeve of about 31.4 cm.
- Grows sideways: add another ladder and shelf levels to widen it, Lundia says.
- Easy to assemble, Lundia says: “Avohylly on helppo koota” (the open shelf is easy to put together).
Watch out for
- The priciest pick by far: €877.00.
- Made to order: “Delivery time approx. 1-2 week, the product goes into the production”.
- Not sold to Germany: it isn’t among the 29 countries Lundia’s webshop sells to (listed next to the price).
- Only the 40 cm deep version: Lundia warns about its own 30 cm shelves that “30 cm syvä hyllytaso on LP-levyä matalampi” (a 30 cm deep shelf level is shallower than an LP).
- No LP count, no load rating and no height between the levels published.
Published specs
- Records it holds, per the maker
- not published (Lundia says LPs fit on its two levels)
- Inside size
- Two LP levels with shelves 50 cm wide and 40 cm deep; height between the levels not published
- Fits a 12-inch sleeve? (our reading)

Everything as the maker publishes it, except the KALLAX inside size, our estimate from IKEA’s insert; checked 27 Oct 2026. Makers give sizes in different orders; each is labelled.
How we picked
- One clear need per pick: shelving for a growing collection, a box to flip through, a turntable stand with storage, a case that closes, a rack on the wall, and solid-wood shelving.
- Will it fit? The maker’s inside size where it publishes one; for the KALLAX, the size of the inserts IKEA makes to fit it (our estimate); otherwise the maker’s own words about records. Our arithmetic against a 31.4 cm sleeve is labelled an estimate.
- How many? Only the maker’s own record count, the lower figure where its page gives two. Where a maker gives none, we say so; load limits appear exactly as the maker states them.
- Listed with a price. On 27 Oct 2026 each maker’s shop listed its pick with a price: IKEA Netherlands, Zomo’s German shop, Crosley’s EU shop (Crosley Radio Europe, run by the distributor Crosley lists for the Netherlands, Germany and seven other European countries), UDG’s EU shop and Lundia’s own shop. Beside the maker, each pick links only to shops whose page for that exact model we opened that day.
- Prices from the maker’s own shop. Each price is the one the maker’s own shop showed for that model on 27 Oct 2026, in euros; for Crosley, its EU shop, run by its distributor. Never a retailer’s price. Prices change, so the shop link shows today’s.
We have not used or measured these for this guide, and we don’t give scores. Where Max has used one himself, his notes will appear under that pick. The full method is on How we pick.
Not published by the maker:
- IKEA KALLAX 77x147 cm: record count
- Zomo VS-Box 100/1: load rating
- Crosley Asheville Medium: inside size
- UDG Ultimate Record Case 80 Vinyl: load rating
- Zomo VS-Rack Wall: inside size, load rating
- Lundia Classic LP shelf: record count, load rating
Considered but left out: Stocubo 1:1 module (the same cube form as the KALLAX, sold one cube at a time; kept as the reserve for pick 1); Teebooks Teenyle wall shelf (the same wall-rack role as pick 5; kept as the reserve for pick 5); vidaXL record cabinet 84.5 × 38 × 89 cm, black (publishes no inside size, LP count or load rating, only that it is made for records; kept as the reserve for pick 3); Thon LP Case 80 (a near-twin of the UDG case; it would repeat pick 4); Crosley record storage crate, Thon Record Stand 75 and Zomo VS-Rack Loft (pass our checks but repeat the box role of pick 2).
Questions
Will 12-inch records fit in an IKEA KALLAX?
IKEA doesn’t publish the compartment size, but its KALLAX inserts, “Dimensioned to fit KALLAX shelving unit”, are 33 × 33 cm. Against a sleeve of about 31.4 cm that leaves at least about 1.6 cm (our estimate), and the inserts are 37 cm deep (the unit is 39 cm deep overall).
How many records fit in a KALLAX?
IKEA doesn’t say. It rates each shelf at 13 kg and the top at 25 kg. By our estimate a full 33 cm compartment of LPs weighs about 17 to 22 kg, over that 13 kg, so a packed cube is past IKEA’s rating.
Which pick holds the most?
Of the 4 makers that publish a count: the Asheville Medium, up to 65 on its crate shelf plus 150 below; the VS-Box 100/1, 100 to 120; the UDG case, about 80; and the VS-Rack Wall, 20 to 30. IKEA and Lundia publish no count.
Should records stand upright or lie flat?
Upright. The Library of Congress says to store discs on edge, with firm dividers every 10 to 15 cm or so, and Duke University’s archivists say records in a box should stand “without excessive leaning”, with only about a finger’s width of space.
Does it need fixing to the wall?
IKEA says the KALLAX “must be securely anchored”, because of a tipping hazard. The VS-Rack Wall (pick 5) hangs on a wall mount; Zomo publishes no load rating for it.
Which one keeps the dust off?
Only the UDG Ultimate Record Case 80 Vinyl closes over the sleeves. The VS-Box 100/1 is open at the top by design, for flipping through.
Where should I keep my records?
Somewhere cool and fairly dry. For home collections the Library of Congress suggests “a cool (room temperature or below), relatively dry (about 35-40% relative humidity or RH), clean, and stable environment”, away from attics and basements, with “Distance from radiators and vents” and “no exposure to direct or intense light” (Library of Congress). Heat is the danger: “Vinyl softens and flows when exposed to excessive heat, which deforms the grooves.” (ARSC Guide).
Pictures and sources
- The KALLAX photo is by Oleksii Nemnozhko on Unsplash, marked “Free to use under the Unsplash License” (license); the photographer’s description reads “Vinyl Record Collection Stored on IKEA Kallax Shelves. Shot on Agfa Color 100 film.” We converted it to WebP, made a smaller copy and cropped a square thumbnail. It shows KALLAX cubes full of LPs, not which size of unit, and we didn’t take it.
- The other five pictures are our own drawings: we found no reuse-licensed photo of any of them. Each follows the shape shown in the maker’s own photos and description, drawn in plain shapes rather than copied.
